According to TechSpot, Google is flatly denying allegations that Gmail reads user emails and attachments to train its Gemini AI models. The controversy emerged after security firm Malwarebytes and blogger Dave Jones interpreted Google’s smart features settings as implying user content could be used for AI training. Gmail began incorporating AI technology in late 2023 with its spam blocker, introduced an AI writing assistant in 2024, and started activating AI-generated summaries by default on mobile devices earlier this year. Despite Google’s insistence that these features are for personalization and have existed for years, the Workspace menu specifically references newly added Gemini functionality multiple times. Some users have reported needing multiple attempts to successfully disable these smart features, raising additional concerns about the opt-out process.
The Privacy Paradox
Here’s the thing: when a company says “we’re not reading your emails” while simultaneously rolling out AI features that literally summarize your email content, it creates a bit of a trust gap. Google‘s position is that these are just smart features for personalization – the same kind they’ve offered for years. But the timing is suspicious, isn’t it? They’re pushing Gemini into everything right now, and suddenly we’re supposed to believe all these AI capabilities just magically appeared without training on user data?
And let’s be real – the opt-out process isn’t exactly straightforward. You’ve got to click the gear icon, navigate through multiple menus, find the right toggles (there are two separate sections for smart features), and even then some users report the settings don’t stick. That doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.
Beyond Privacy: Actual Security Threats
This isn’t just about theoretical privacy concerns either. Back in March, Mozilla found that attackers could inject prompts that would turn Gmail’s AI summaries into phishing messages. So we’re not just talking about data collection – we’re talking about actual security vulnerabilities that could put users at risk. When you add AI to something as sensitive as email, you’re creating new attack surfaces that didn’t exist before.
Basically, we’re in this weird transition period where companies are racing to add AI to everything, but the security and privacy implications are being treated as afterthoughts.
